Cleaning house

Hola Familia,

Well another week flew by. Seriously the days are super long here but the weeks fly by. It is crazy. It was a different week for us this week. We had to clean out our investigators list. Nobody was progressing and didn't really care to listen to us. So we dropped a lot of people. After, we were only left with 2 investigators. So we are starting off at zero again. It has been really frustrating and hard to work with nothing. But we are focusing a lot on reactivating less active members. This area is full of them so we went searching for them. We walked about 15 miles a day to find these people and out of like 120 we found 4. So that was fun. But they accepted us and began to listen to us.  We have been working a lot with them and hoping that they will regain the excitement they once had with the church and with this excitement, they could help us in our missionary work. We are still looking for new people to teach but it is tough. We have been trying to work a lot with the members because the best investigators come from references. So that has been another focus of ours. Sunday was interesting because we knew that we didn't have any investigators coming to church but when we got to the church building, a lot of the less active members were there. It was nice to know that even though we couldn't get anyone new to church, we at least brought people to church. So that about sums up our week. A little rough.

On the bright side, M had her confirmation. She is officially a member of the church of Jesus Christ. So that was exciting. It is always super exciting to help someone progress from the beginning, you get to help them through the whole acceptance process. It is super fun. The cool thing is that she already had her interview with the bishop to enter the temple this week. She already has it planned to visit the temple Thursday with the ward. So that was the best part of this week.

It is still raining. Everyday. It usually starts around lunch time and continues throughout the day. The biggest news in Heredia, is that Heredia won the championship on Saturday. So Saturday night was a party. The game started at 8 so nobody wanted to listen to us. It is really hard to work on game days. We were able to hear the game all night long. Just by the reactions in the streets, we knew what was going on in the game. The game went into penalty kicks and Heredia won. Heredia went crazy. We could see everyone running to downtown Heredia after the game, fireworks, screaming, honking, and singing all night long. It was really crazy. Heredia has been partying since Saturday night and who knows when it will stop. So that is the big news here and well the volcano eruption, but that was so far from me. It didn't affect us much.

The stake here is doing a really cool activity for the youth. I think it would be a little tough to do back home but it would be cool. It is an activity to help in the missionary work. The youth are called to be missionaries for a day. This Saturday the youth from the stake go in the morning to the stake center for a mini MTC and then are divided and paired with a fulll time missionary to go out and contact in the street and really be a missionary for a day. It seems pretty cool. In church they called up the youth one by one to give them their calling. The kids are going to be able to experience missionary work for a day. It would be tough at home because there aren't that many missionaries and a ton of youth.

Sounds like everyone is doing great. Of course Kylie got picked to answer questions in the game. Keep up the good work in soccer. Kendal, you are almost done with middle school finish strong. I have been trying to do more exercise. I haven't gained too much weight but I could use the exercise. Mom don't worry I haven't done anything stupid lately. I am trying not to pull any Kendal moments. I miss you guys a lot. I haven't gotten my packages yet but maybe this week. I love you guys. Be good and don't do anything stupid.

PS - I heard a cool quote the other day. I don't know who said it but it is good. "Imperfect action is better than perfect inaction" so that is my quote for the week.

This is my week with rain - massive down pours.

New Comp & a Baptism

Hola familia,

Well this week was a crazy week. It all started on wednesday morning when we got a phone call about changes. We got changed.  I stayed and my comp got sent off to a new area. So I now have a new companion. He is great. He is Elder Gandara. He is from Mexico and we have the same amount of time in the mission. He entered the MTC the same day but just entered the mission field earlier than me. But he is great. He is 18 years old and a goofball. So we have a lot of fun. That is the crazy part about this week.

But the great part is that we had our baptism last night. M got baptized last night and I was able to baptize her. It was a super cool experience. It started off rough because a member offered to fill up the font so we could work. Well we didn't hear back from the member about the font so we called and called. He fell asleep and let the font overflow. The problem was that the font door was closed and locked and he didn't have keys. He also didn't have keys to the cleaning closet either. So we had to run to the church to clean it and turn off the water. Well we turn off the water but we didn't have keys to the cleaning closet. We called a member, the only member who has keys, and he said that he locked the keys in the cleaning closet. We had to use scissors and cards to pick the lock. Well we picked the lock 30 minutes before the baptism and started to clean super fast. But all the members showed up to us cleaning and it was super embarassing. We had the whole ward helping us clean the floor before the baptism. So that was the funny part.

The best part was the baptism. After settling down, the baptism was great. M was super nervous and shaking uncontrolably. But super excited. It was a great service. We had about 40 members there. The water was ice cold as always. Super cold. But after M came out of the water, she told me that was super hot. This is a common response I hear from people. I think they really feel the spirit super strong. But what is always great is to see the change in happiness. She was always happy but after she was floating in the clouds. But after these events, I am always super happy too. Because I am able to help these people change their lives and help them have a better life. Baptisms are the best! They are always stressfull before but after it is only happiness. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to help these people progress in Gods plan. It is super fun and I love it. After M came up to me and thanked me for everything I did to help her get to this day. She was crying but tears of joy. It was just a happy day and she had been waiting for this for a long time. Days like this I will never forget. Days like this make the missions worth it.

So that was what happened this week. Still struggling finding new investigators. Contacting in the street and knocking doors, doesn't really work here. But we have received a lot of references. That is where we find a lot of new people. So my comp and I have been trying to find ways to serve the people. The other day, we got invited by a 7 year old girl to go and jump on the trampoline with her. So we went. It was super fun. But the next day, the mom came to us and thanked us for just jumping with her daughter. She said just from that small act we left a spirit in the house. It is always cool to hear that we can really help people through the smallest things. We have received a couple referrals from that. But everything is going great here. Super hot. I heard we are in a draught so that makes things hard. There isn't a lot of water in the country. Oh well. Its part of the mission.

It sounds like everyone is doing great. Kendal is too young to graduate. I read your project. It was really good spanish. But I can't believe you went on vacation to all those places. Kylie is still Kylie and I am still better in soccer. I am gaining a lot of weight. It is because we eat a ton. The members are always feeding us. All they want to do is feed us. It is really nice. I want to go to Mexico. Study your spanish so you don't sound like a gringos. That is cool about Annette. Tell her congrats and ask her about the Domincan. I loved the dominican. Tell everyone Hi. I sent Nana a card today. She should get it soon. I love you guys and miss everyone a ton. Don't do anything stupid. Nos Vemos

The fotos are from the baptism of me and my comp and M ex boyfriends family. They have been there to support her through everything because her parents don't support her at all. So that was super cool.

Night sunset.

Good to see you...

Hola familia,

It was great talking to you guys last night. It is always nice to see the family. It sounds like everyone is doing great. I miss you guys a lot and getting your messages are always a so much fun.

The bad news is that I have no way to send you guys photos today. :(  I left the usb thing at home so I can't send anything. I will send some next week for sure. This morning we went to visit the white house here in Costa Rica. They actually call it the yellow house. But the funny thing is that it isn't yellow or white. It is black. We got a special tour that lasted 5 min because the presidents house only has 4 rooms. The building is smaller than our church building at home. It has 4 rooms or offices. One for the president and 2 for her vice presidents. Then one extra for visitors. The biggest thing in the building was the fountain in the entrance. So we got a short tour but we didn't get to meet the president because she wasn't there. She doesn't go to work until 2 in the afternoon. So we just got a tour. I took some pics so I will send them next week.

My area is up the mountain. Barva is the biggest part. If the catholic church is on your right and the park is on the left, just keep going straight ahead and that is my area. My area consists of Santa Lucia, Barva, San Roque, San Pedro, San Jose de la Montaña, Puente Salas, all the way up to Birri. So it is pretty big. It is a good area. It has a lot of potential, we just need to find it. We came into this area starting with nothing, and we are slowly starting it up. So it is a work in progress. We are in the process of trying to find new people. We are trying to be creative and think outside of the box.

My comp is great. We work well together because we both get it. We both trained and both were district leaders. So we understand how the mission works. It is just that this area is different from our past areas. We are in the city so the people are different. They aren't like the people in the fields. But we are working hard and always joking around. We put a ton of scriptures/quotes on our walls to make us feel smarter. We figured that if we made ourselves feel smarter, we would work smarter. And it has worked for us. We have had a lot of good days. We got the idea from the movie "A Beautiful Mind". He was smart and had everything on the walls. So we thought it would work for us. :)  The Zone leaders are great. They are super cool and we are always joking around with them. So our house is a lot of fun. It makes this area really cool. They both have a lot of time on the mission. One has 22 months and the other has 18 months. So they know what they are doing.

Well that is the update from yesterday. I haven't gotten my packages yet. I may get them later today. But I will let you know when I get them. I love you guys. Thank you for all the great letters. I love reading them every week. I miss you guys. Well next week, I will have pics and more things to write about. Pura Vida

Obama in CR

Hola familia,
This week went by really fast. Super fast. Every week in the mission goes by super fast. The days are long but the weeks fly by. This week was another rough week. We are still going strong and eating a ton. I found a scale the other day and I am back to my normal weight 185. They feed us so much here and it is all so good. I love all of it. The best are the fruits. Bananas and pineapples are my favorite. I know it is surprising. I didn't like fruit before my mission and now I eat it everyday. They feed us so much here that our bathroom is broken. We have to try and fixed it today. It is leaking water. I guess it wasn't made to withstand 4 gringos. Oh, and mom we don't have a cleaning lady. We have to clean our house. We just have a cook to cook lunches and someone to wash our clothes. So we don't have to worry about people robbing our house.
This week was interesting. I had interviews with President. It was a 3 month checkup. Just to see how we are doing and see if we have any questions. It was good. He has high hopes for me and really thinks highly of me. So it helps me to work harder. After my interview, I went on divisions and went to another area. It was crazy because there was this guy that called us over when we were walking. He was in his car and said that he was a member from Florida that was here working. He seemed really depressed and asked if we could give him a blessing in his car. So we gave him a blessing in his car. It was really weird, but the guy seemed to really need one. The divisions were fun but the next morning there was a ton of confusion and I ended up on a bus to do divisions with the assistants. So I ended up in San Jose two days before President Obama comes to Costa Rica. San Jose was a mess with police and parades everywhere. I was running through parades to find the bus. It was super fun. And then I went with one of the assistants back to my area that afternoon. Crazy but fun.
The biggest news here is that President Obama came to Costa Rica and he shut down all of Costa Rica. They wanted to cut down traffic in the city, so they announced that nobody was going to work on Friday when Obama came. So everyone went to the beach. It really hurt us this week, also because they had labor day the day before. So this week has been super crazy and everyone was celebrating the arrival of Obama.
Good Job Kendal!! Keep up the good work. Siga adelante y estudie mucho :)
Kylie you are too young to see that movie. Everyone here told me it was ok too. They said it was cool but it wasn't Iron Man and good job on making soccer and gymnastics.
Mom have fun with your new calling. I think you are destined to stay in Young Womens your whole life. And you should go with the missionaries. There is a reason why they are asking you to go. I have been doing push ups and exercises here because with the weather it is hard to run.
I love you guys. We can Skype this Sunday. It will be in the night time around 7 pm here. My comp's family can't do it until later at night so we will do it then. I don't know where yet but we can Skype again and it can only be 30 to 45 min. So think of good questions. And I will use my account like last time. Can't wait to see your faces on Sunday.
Love you and talk to you guys soon.
